Still Alive.

I can almost see my way out of what I thought was a bottomless pit of schoolwork last week. Everything will be done for this term by Wednesday, April 6th. And then that means my first year of my MLIS will be done as well!

I already have next year's classes picked: Cataloguing I, Information Literacy, Information Management Systems(required), and Collections Development. In the Winter term I will be taking Archives, History of the Book, Records Management, and E-Text Design. Whee!

Writer's Block: School daze

Do you have negative or positive associations with the beginning of the school year?
I have always loveloveLOVED the first day of school. I was always so excited the night before that I couldn't sleep, and it became a kind of tradition with my mom and I that I would come downstairs and she would make me a cup of chamomile "Sleep Time" tea. And then I could sleep! She also always took a picture of us in front of the house on the first day of school just before the bus came to get us.

And next week, I'm heading back to school and I'm equally excited! I picked up my Dal Card/U-pass on Monday, and got my student loan all squared away. I'm officially a student! It's sweet. And next week is orientation and I find out who I will be working for for my assisstantship, and have my fist class andandAND! I'm EXCITED.

Writer's Block: Object of my affection

You may have heard about the woman who married the Eiffel Tower. If you had to marry an object, what object would you choose, and why?

Dude. Hitachi Magic Wand. All. The. Way.

Coming Out to My Mom

So, my mom and I have a bit of a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy concerning certain topics having to do with my life. It's informal, and we've never discussed it, but it covers things like sex, religion, etc. She's a Jehovah's Witness, I am a godless heathen.

Here's the scene: Mom and I are at my next door neighbour's place having tea and watching whatever is on TV. Now Deb is a good friend, and we dated quite a few years previously. The movie on TV happens to be Fried Green Tomatoes, a perfectly lovely movie for a tea-drinking afternoon.

My mom starts up a discussion thusly:

"I used to really love this movie when I thought they (Ruth and Idgie) were just really good friends. And then I found out they were lesbians! Can't anyone just be friends anymore? I mean, look at me and my friend Ursula! We've been friends for over 30 years and have never slept with each other. And you and Deb, you're really good friends and you've never slept together, right?"

A beat of silence, then Deb breaks out in uncontrollable sniggering, and I say "Well yes mom, actually we have."

My poor mum.

She blinks a couple of times and says "Oh."

"Mom, you know you shouldn't ask questions that you don't want to know the answer to."

"Well, I thought I KNEW the answer to that one!"

And that was how it happened. She did not ask any further questions, ever. The end.

Time Travel Meme (from Iryn)

If you could go back in time and talk to yourself at half your current age, what are three things about your life that the younger self would never believe?

Oh man, half my life ago I was legal to drink in Quebec and almost legal everywhere else in Canada. Good sweet Lordisa.

1 - He's going to break up with you and it's going to suck a lot. You will lose all your mutual friends and feel really alone. Don't ever feel like "getting too attached" is a bad thing--you're supposed to get attached to the people you are in relationships with. Feeling love is never wrong, he's just an idiot. You'll realize this in a year or two. You will go on to fall in love many times, and will meet someone who will be your biggest cheerleader, who will support you no matter what you do.

2 - You like girls too. It's okay. Someday your mom will find out and she will still love you even if she doesn't approve. The way it happens is really funny, I will tell you later.

3 - You're going to be awesome at so many thing you aren't going to have time to do them all. Seriously. Be more confident, you rock.

Wee Update of Randomness...

My mom is doing much better, she is now done with all the chemo and radiation and just has to do hormone therapy for five years. I think once she's feeling better she's going to take to the road and come and visit me, which will be awesome.

I applied and have received my unofficial acceptance into the Masters of Library and Information Studies at Dal, so I'm very excited to be going back to school in the fall! Work is crazy busy right now so I haven't had a whole lot of time to process that. I have to start thinking about applying for scholarships and other funding.

Speaking of which, I need to get several years worth of taxes done! I've found someone who will do them for $20 a return, so that's one less thing I have to worry about. I've got a huge mental block when it comes to government paperwork. Ugh. I'm not looking forward to applying for student loans.

On the crafty front, I am doing another Halifax Crafters fair in April, the 17th and 18th to be more precise, and I have bought 20 pounds of merino top to dye and prep for it. Every Sunday I dye up 1-2 pounds--I've been good and am keeping a dye notebook. I've named a lot of my colourways after Tom Waits songs. I will post pictures soon! I have more daylight to work with now.

I was exceedingly cranky today after work because I wanted to go to Knitting Out Loud down at Cafe Ristoretto, but I knew I had to stay home and cook myself some real food for the week. I had a glass of wine and killed some stuff on Fallout 3 on my Xbox, and felt better about the whole thing.

Halifax Crafter's Winter Market!!!

I am spinning my fingers to the bone and scraping my knuckles blending fibre! I have made some wicked new yarns, including ones inspired by Star Trek. Come out to the market this weekend, Halifax peeps!

Googlepages finally shut down like they were threatening and moved my website to Googlesites, where it sits, broken and ugly. So, this is the impetus I needed (read, kick in the arse) to register a domain and do a real website. Keep your eyes peeled for uberwench.ca!

Also, is it just me, or does something rush in to fill the void whenever there is the slightest chance you might have some free time?
